En Lektion I Feernes Historie

Legends say that fairies went into hiding to avoid the humans who invaded their lands. In some cases, the fairies literally went underground, making their homes in caves, burrows, and underwater fortresses. A folklorist on the Scottish isle of Arran told writer Moyra Doorly that “the fairies left when electricity came.” As modern people took over the earth, cutting down trees, building roads, and creating cities, fairy folk withdrew to more remote locales and finally into the spirit world.

:blossom: An invisible “veil” separates the world of humans from the fairy realm , which makes it challenging for us to interact with them. Not all are friendly and some are considered dangerous. Interacting with fae is something serious and shouldn’t be taken light hearted. At certain times of the year- specifically on Beltane (May 1) and Samhain Eve (October 31)- that veil thins, enabling people to see and communicate more easily with spirits of all kinds. Midsummer’s Eve, as Shakespeare tell us, is another good time to cavort with the fey.

One summer day in 1947, five year-old Nona Rees and her mother were walking home from the beach at the seaside community of St, David’s in Pembrokeshire, Wales, when they spotted a fairy. Their path led along the rocky coast and through the beautiful countryside- a perfect setting for nature spirits to frolic. According to Nona, they saw “a tiny pure white creature, with wings, like the traditional Christmas Tree fairy but perhaps only an inch to an inch and a half high” above a gorse bush. Being natural history enthusiasts, she and her mother realized it wasn’t a moth or butterfly, “it was definitely a fairy.” - from Fairies: Real Encounters with the Little People, by Janet Bord.

As we’ve already discussed, fairies serve as nature’s caretakers. Mythology tells us that long before humans dominated the landscape, fairies of all kinds populated the earth’s wild places. The Welsh Tylwyth Teg, for instance, lived deep in the woods and on isolated islands off the coast of Wales. Germany’s nixies dwelt in secret regions beneath streams and waterfalls. The Hungarian tunder perched high on mountaintops. Perhaps these beings were more substantial and less ephemeral in those days than they are now.

:herb: Deep in Russia’s immense forests , known as the taiga, woodland fairies ruled supreme. These nature spirits, called leshiye, were master shapeshifters who sometimes appeared as tall as trees or as tiny as mice. They could assume forms of animals or human beings,too, or as composite creatures with green beards and hair and the horns and hooves of a goat. These trickster fairies were known for confusing mortals who intruded into their territory, causing them to become hopelessly lost in leshiye land. Whether the fairies did this for amusement  or to safeguard the forests and wildlife  from woodcutters and hunters is unknown - perhaps both are true.

:herb: Fairies still abide in lakes and mountains , forests and fields . You might also find them flourishing in flower gardens and vegetables patches. They still take seriously their role as nature’s stewards, nurturing and protecting not only plants, but stones, animals and other creatures as well. Many fairies, legends tell us, also possess magical healing powers and excel in the use of herbs and minerals to cure ills of all kinds.

:herb: Usually fairies stay out of sight of humans , going about their business without fanfare. But it you detour off the beaten track into the peaceful, unspoiled places on out planet, you may get lucky and enjoy a close encounter with these nature spirits. Just be careful not to get too close or to fall for their ruses- you might never come back from the fairy realm!

Scottish Folklore Divides The Realm Of Faerie and its fairy denizens into two categories; Seelie and Unseelie. Seelie faries , whose name stems from the same Scottish root word as “silly”, meaning “happy”, are good-natured and generally associated with lightness,goodness, and benevolence to humans. It’s still wise to be cautious with a Seelie fairy, as some may play pranks and sometimes aren’t aware of the chaos they can cause. Unseelie Fairies are more darkly inclined, appearing at night and wrecking havoc seemingly indiscriminately among mortals and their fellow fairies. Then can sometimes grow fond of a human and treat him or her with kindness, but generally they are up to no good.

Virgo: Wood/Mountain fairy, flowing brown hair, green eyes, communicates with animals, prefers the colder months, adventurous, wears dress made out of flowers, brown wings, gold glow.
Libra: Hills fairy, caramel brown hair, chubby, adorable, green eyes, prefers spring, yellow glow, wears small tunic, corset and leggings, loves the comforts of home, yellow wings, friendly.
Scorpio: Cave fairy, turns red when angry and yellow when happy, rainbow when neutral, rainbow glow, mischievous, loves singing and dancing, enjoys a good feast, skilled at baking, social butterfly, adaptable to any environment.
Sagittarius: Fire fairy, woven headband with a ruby, gold wings with blue outline, red orange and yellow bangles, green eyes with flecks of gold, blunt, pessimistic, red glow, loves summer.
Capricorn: Nomadic Fairy, wanders all over the world, doesn’t settle in one area, pink curly hair, purple eyes, loves the Earth, can be quite defensive and violent when threatened, self-assured.
Aquarius: Tall fairy, blue eyes, blonde curly hair, lilac wings, melodic voice, loves animals, ambitious, pink glow, is shy and withdrawn during the warmer months, lives in the arctic.
Pisces: Ocean fairy, dark blue eyes, long, blonde wavy hair, silky voice, flirtatious, loves the creatures of the ocean, white glow, outspoken, outgoing, confident, lives in the ocean.
